Wozzeck
Berg’s startling opera Wozzeck commanded the Civic’s stage with scenery designed by Tony nominee Robert Brill.  The bulk of the building on this scenery was steel work.  The raked turntable rotated both ways while the inner circle rotated and pivoted independently.  In addition to figuring out the structural needs, engineering the huge and weighty moving parts created immense challenges.  Once the scenery was painted and assembled in the shop (all except top level), it was dismantled and moved to the rehearsal space so that the singers could rehearse on it.  Then it was dismantled again and loaded into the theatre.
